Becoming a parent is the most beautiful thing that could ever happen to anyone. Your child is your little bundle of joy. But have you ever wondered that the parents are a large factor in how their children perceive their bodies! If not, maybe it’s time to think about it.
Note how your kid talks! Do you see yourself in your child? Does it feel like your mini version is staring right back at you?
Let’s discuss some points.
Parents Are A Large Factor In How Their Children Perceive Their Bodies
Negative Self Talk
Do you look at yourself in the mirror and complain about how you look? You do realize the fact that those little eyes are watching you! You might have noticed that your kid is learning a lot from you.
You can call yourself your child’s first school. So if you indulge yourself in negative self-talk and constantly complain how out of shape you are, your kid might start taking it usually too.
Being Too Conscious
How do you behave in public? Are you too conscious about your body? Why is that so? Your children learn by observing you. You have learned a lot by watching.
Maybe you got this habit from your parents. It’s hard to say unless you think hard and find out how you develop the habit of being too conscious about yourself in public.
The fact is that everyone is so busy! Look around. People are thinking about themselves, and they have a lot on their minds. Even if you feel someone is judging you, they won’t even remember about it.
Opinions are variable! So you don’t have to be conscious, and if you are confident, your children will be too!
Worrying Too Much
You might be building scenarios in your mind. Take a close look at your child! You can learn a lot about yourself by merely observing your kid.
You would realize that there are so many habits your children are picking from you.
Maybe you worry a lot! You don’t have to. You must be doing everything you possibly can to give a positive experience about life to your kid. The least concern should be thinking about body image.
You are an essential factor in your child’s life. You have to be amazing! Your child is your mirror image; think about it.
Stop Body Shaming
Do you judge people based on how they look? Do you comment on the fitness level of people around you?
Are you establishing the norms as in how one should look like? If so, stop right there!
Next time when you see a person, even if it’s a celebrity, use your words wisely. You don’t have to comment on how skinny someone is or how much weight they have gained.
Your kid would think that it’s okay to say anything about someone’s fitness. But it can be rude! You might not even realize, and your child may start perceiving their body image in a certain way.
Maybe you adore being skinny, and thus, they would think it’s important. You have to let your kids know that a healthy BMI is important, and everything else is secondary.
Wrapping It Up
You are the most important person in your child’s life. Your children matter the most. It would help if you strived to give them positive memories and experience to grow up with a positive outlook towards life and the way they perceive their bodies.
